BANGALORE: Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Commissioner K. Jothiramalingam has issued show-cause notices to eight officials, including an executive engineer and an assistant executive engineer, of the Engineering, Revenue and Health departments for not being present at the BMP Control Rooms at night to attend to emergencies during the spell of heavy rain on March 5. The Shanti Nagar Executive Engineer B.T. Ramesh, the Padmanabha Nagar Assistant Executive Engineer M.R. Rangaswamy, and Assistant Engineers, Mahesh (Dharmaraya Swamy Temple Ward), Purushottam (Govindaraj Nagar), Venugopal (Gayatri Nagar), Prakash Murthy (Subramanyapura), Mahadevaiah (Ulsoor) and Rahul (Shanti Nagar), have been asked to explain within three days why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them for not being present on duty during a crisis. Sources in the BMP told The Hindu that though the notices were issued on Friday, they were despatched to the officials on Monday. Following a complaint from the BJP floor leader A.H. Basvaraju that these officials were not on duty though they had been assigned the job, the Commissioner, who enquired into the matter, found that these officials had neglected their duties. After the rain havoc in September-October last year, the Commissioner had directed all officials to take turns and work in night shifts on all days and during the day even on holidays and Sundays.
