One killed, five injured in attack by deranged man

Taunting provoked the attack, say police

BANGALORE: One person was killed and five, including a police constable, were injured when a man with mental illness attacked passers-by with a chopper on Kanakapura Road on Monday.

The mentally-ill man, who was attacked by the public in retaliation, suffered head injuries and died in a hospital.

The incident occurred around 1.15 p.m. near the State's Government's Sericulture Farm on Kanakapura Road in Thalaghatpura police station limits.

The man was identified as B.L. Rajendra (40), a law graduate and a resident of New Tharagupet. According to the police, Rajendra was mentally ill for the past few years.

The police said Rajendra grabbed a chopper from a tender coconut shop and started attacking passers-by, injuring six of them, after some persons taunted him while he was walking near the farm.

One of the injured, Ramakrishna (40), an employee of the Department of Posts and a resident of Rajaji Nagar I Block, died.

The names of the injured were given as S.D. Ganachar, Hombalaiah, Muniraju, Krishnappa and police constable N. Biradar.

The Thalaghatpura police have registered a case.
