dated March 15, 1956: Mountbattens in Delhi

Admiral Earl Mountbatten, Britain's First Sea Lord, and Countess Mountbatten were given a warm welcome at the Palam airport in Delhi on March 14 on their arrival on a week's visit to India. This is Lord Mountbatten's first visit to India since he relinquished office as free India's first Governor-General in 1948. He was greeted with shouts of "Lord Mountbatten Zindabad" by a large crowd at the airport, which showered flowers on him and his wife. Lord Mountbatten recalled that it was eight years since he had been in India. "It has made absolutely no difference; eight years went just like eight minutes. I am delighted to be in India again." During his stay Lord Mountbatten is to visit naval establishments in India. "I have come here to see what I can do to help the Indian Navy. I shall be visiting various naval establishments in Bombay, Cochin and also Khadakvasala," he said. As they alighted from their special aircraft, the Mountbattens were greeted by Prime Minister Nehru and his daughter, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, and the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan.
