Busy days for the Dog Squad

Toney, Robin and Blackey are busy these days with fake bomb calls becoming common in the city. These exclusive felines belong to the Dog Squad of the District Crime Record Bureau (DCRB) of the City Police.

Toney is a Labrador while Robin is a German Shepherd. They are sniffers and their companion Blackey, a Doberman, is a tracker.

"Our work has increased after the police began to receive anonymous calls at least once in a day. We are also deployed for duty during search operations day and night, " said K. Manoj, head constable, one of the five handlers of the dog squad.

This all-male club is an efficient pack for anti-sabotage activities and detection of sensational crimes.

But mostly they are given laborious tasks since their services are utilised for cases of the Kozhikode (Rural).

Usually sniffers are employed for detection of bombs at the Nadapuram-Vadakara belt for long hours. It can be tiresome for them, Mr. Manoj said.

Toney has been trained for detection of bombs ever since it was a puppy. Its mother, Princy, was also a Police Dog.

Robin was purchased from Ootty and trained with the Border Security Force. Blackey had its training in the State Capital.

Plans have been mooted to establish a Dog Squad at Vadakara. Then, the workload of Dog Squad in Kozhikode City would lessen, he said.
