KANNUR: The district police and the Kannur District Two-wheeler Dealers' Association will jointly organise slow driving contest for two-wheeler drivers as part of their drive to create a culture of slow and careful driving. Announcing this here at a press conference on Tuesday, DIG (Northern Range) V. Shantharam said that the campaign was being launched in view of the increasing road accidents mostly involving two-wheelers. The slow motorcycle driving contest would be held here on March 26. Two-wheeler drivers from Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod can participate in the contest, he said. Prize money would be Rs.3,000, Rs.2,000 and Rs.1,000 for first, second and third prize winners respectively, he said. Mr. Shantharam also said that a three-day workshop on traffic rules would also be organised after the Assembly election. Another class would also be organised for four-wheeler drivers on defensive driving practices. The DIG said that though deficiency in road infrastructure facilities and short-sightedness in road planning were major causes of fatal road accidents, the rate of accidents would come down if the drivers imbibed the culture of safe and careful driving.
