Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article "Rooting for Sharia laws in Bradford" (March 14). The author has given an enlightened rationale for adapting Islam and interpreting it to become compatible with the existing social conditions. The rigidity of the clergy should be combated by intellectuals by interpreting Islamic laws broadly as courts interpret common law in the light of the prevailing situation.
Kasim Sait,
* * * What Muslims need is education and employment. Muslim leaders should start a vigorous campaign to sensitise the community on the need to achieve academic success, develop its competitiveness, and live peacefully with the larger society. What Muslims need least are separate laws, and quotas.
V. Phaneendra,
* * * No matter how unique a religion is, there is scope for adjustments based on the needs of the changing times and environment. The spirituality of a religion transcends rituals and practices, which may not be relevant to the compulsions of survival.
J.V. Reddy,
