News Analysis
A correction for a correction. Praveen Swami, who wrote the article "Mayhem in the menagerie" (Op-Ed, March 13, 2006) points out that we were incorrect in saying Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was not president (Corrections and Clarifications, March 14, 2006). Bhutto was both President of Pakistan and Prime Minister. He took over as President and Chief Martial Law Administrator on December 20, 1971. It was only after the constitution of 1973 came into force that he became Prime Minister. The Islamist mobilisation referred to in the article began during his tenure as President, and continued after he became Prime Minister.
He was right, we got it wrong. As is his practice, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram quoted poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar in his budget speech ("It is aye all the way for concessions on two dishes", March 1, 2006). The Kural he quoted should read as "Karumam Sidhaiyamal Kannoda Vallarku, Urimai Udaithu Iv Ulagu (The world is his who does his job with compassion"), and not "... Kannodullavarku ... ."
Where did the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE hold talks on February 22-23, 2006? We said in Geneva, the Swiss capital (Editorial, "Saved from war, from now", March 14, 2006, page 10). The talks indeed were held in Geneva, the city of peace, but the capital of Switzerland is Bern.
In "Major obstacles to metal sector's growth" (Business Review, March 13, 2006), the Kalinga Nagar industrial area is in Jajpur district of Orissa, and not Jeypore district, as mentioned in the article.
