HYDERABAD: S. Sudhir of Ivy club won the TCS Cup corporate tennis tournament, organised by Sports Mantra, with a hard-fought 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over Pratyush of TCS in the final here. The match lasted close to three hours. Later, in the doubles final, Srikant Kaza and B. Srinivas combined well to down Pratyush and Somal (TCS) 6-2, 6-2.
Speed Gun Challenge
M.L. Jaisimha 365 Cricket Academy will organise a Speed Gun Challenge, supported by Vivimed, at the Gymkhana Grounds here, to spot the fastest bowler in Hyderabad, according to Vidyuth Jaisimha, coordinator of the Academy. The competitions will be held on March 19 for those above 15 years and there will be morning and evening sessions. The five fastest bowlers will be given free special coaching at the Academy. The Speed Gun Challenge series will also be organised later in Vijayawada, Anantapur and Visakhapatnam. For further details call 32964963 or 32964973.
Beach volleyball
A beach volleyball tournament will be organised at Mushirabad Playground from March 16 in which top teams from Hyderabad will take part. S.R. Prem Raj, Director of Sports, MCH, will inaugurate the tournament while former international T. Gopal will preside. The district team for the ensuing inter-district championship will be picked based on the performances here.
Srikanth, Mastan shine
A whirlwind 96 by Srikanth helped Mechanical Department score a 64-run victory over Electrical (Traction rolling stock) in the second Divisional Railway Manager inter-department cricket tournament played at the Railway Stadium in Vijayawada on Tuesday. In another match, Commercial Department scored a resounding 227-run victory over Electrical (Traction distribution) and the highlight of the match was a blitzkrieg 92 (33 balls) by Commercial department's Shaik Chinna Mastan. The scores: Mechanical Department (Carriage & Wagons) 189 for 4 in 20 overs (Srikanth 96) bt Electrical (Traction rolling stock) 125 for 9 in 20 overs. Commercial Department 263 for 4 in 20 overs (Shaik Chinna Mastan 92, S.T. Kumarguru 60, J. Srinivas 57) bt Electrical (Traction distribution) 36 in 13 overs.
Natallia upsets Divya Rao
Maharashtra's Natallia Khaniejo outplayed third seed Divya Rao of AP to enter the quarterfinals of the ICC-AITA super series for u-14 boys and girls at Vijayawada on Tuesday. TN's S. Sidhartha defeated Surya Pavan of AP 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to storm into last eight. Gujarat's S. Mehta, V. Munshaw, TN's M. Mayur, AP's Yeswanth, S. V. Abhishek, C. Pandit and N Sai Karthik are the other quarterfinalists. In the girls' section, AP's T. Nilaya, Bhavana, Delhi's Rishika, Shweta, Gujarat's Nova, Ankita and MP's Aishwariya entered the quaterfinals. Rayudu scalps five
M.S. Rayudu claimed five-wickets as APSRTC managed to beat Cargo Handlers by 13 runs in the VDCA institutions at Visakhapatnam on Tuesday. The scores: APSRTC 179 in 47 overs (Ch. S.V. Raju 50, K. Ch. Babu 40, Gurunadh four for 48) bt Cargo Handlers 166 in 31.2 overs (M.S. Rayudu five for 31).
Tennis tournament
Visakhapatnam Veterans Tennis Association is organising the CMR-AITA veterans' National ranking tournament at Visakhapatnam from April 8 to 15. Around 200 players from different States are expected to participate in the Rs. 2.5 lakh prize money tournament. Entries close on April 3 and are to be sent to organising secretary D.S.N. V. Polaraju's 50th minute strike helped Fort Union FC beat Steel Plant 1-0 in the Visakhapatnam district football league in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
