Panaji: A late goal by Ranty Martins guided defending champion Dempo Sports Club to a 2-1 win over fellow Goan outfit Salgaocar in the 10th ONGC National Football League here on Tuesday. Dempo, playing its first match after the break, failed to capitalise on the several opportunities it got in the first half and had to wait till the 67th minute to take the lead.
Roberto opens account
Roberto de Silva, who saw his freekick hit the post in the first half, fired Dempo ahead when he powered a volley from outside the box to beat Salgaocar custodian Juje Siddi. However, Salgaocar was level three minutes later through an own-goal when defender John Dias, trying to clear a cross from the right by Bhuvan Joshi, misdirected his shot into the Dempo goal.
Late penalty
Just when the match seemed to be heading for a draw, Dempo earned a penalty one minute before the end when defender Agnelo Colaco brought down Clifford Miranda inside the box. Ranty Martins made no mistake to give Dempo full three points, which took its tally to 13 from eight matches, while Salgaocar, remained on six points from eight games. PTI
