KURNOOL: CPI activists led by city secretary K. Jagannatham resisted the demolition of houses put up on encroached land at Seetharam Nagar near Market Yard on Tuesday. Municipal authorities led by Assistant City Planner Venkat Reddy deployed an excavator to demolish the houses. CPI city secretary K. Jagannath and the squatters resisted the attempts of the authorities and blocked the passage of the excavator. They argued that the families had been living on the open site for the last 30 years and built houses. The court also ruled that the affected families be given alternative sites. But the authorities offered sites to the families away from the city, which would affect their livelihood. Instead, the families should be given houses under Rajiv Grihakalpa scheme, the leaders argued. After arguments and counter arguments, the authorities gave the squatters time till March 20 to pursue their case with the Revenue Department for allotment of houses under Rajiv Grihakalpa scheme. The police were also deployed anticipating trouble.
