CHENNAI: Kancheepuram chalked out a six-wicket win over Tiruvallur in the final of the S.S. Rajan trophy inter-district limited-overs cricket tournament at the MAC stadium here on Tuesday. Put in, Tiruvallur made 237 before being all out in the 48th over. P. Shijith Chandran (53), V. Gautam (40) and S. Vasanth Saravanan (64) were the main contributors to the total. For his persistence, medium-pacer G. Vignesh bagged four wickets conceding 29 runs. In reply, Kancheepuram made a steady start and consolidated through two strong partnerships. First Devendran (65) and G. Umapathy (50) added 104 runs for the second wicket and then R. Srinivasan (50 not out) and Kadhar Basha (36) put on 95 for the fourth wicket as Kancheepuram's victory came in the 47th over itself. C.R. Vijayaraghavan, TNCA Secretary, gave away the prizes. The scores: Tiruvallur 237 in 47.1 overs (P. Shijith Chandran 53, V. Gautam 40, S. Vasanth Saravanan 64, G. Vignesh four for 29) lost to Kancheepuram 241 for four in 46.4 overs (Devendran 65, G. Umapathy 50, R. Srinivasan 50 not out).
Theivendran scalps six
An excellent spell of medium-pace bowling by Theivendran (six for 16) helped Maruthu Pandiar Cricket Club carve out a 29-run victory over Master Thunder Cricket Club in the Ramanathapuram District Cricket Association first division league in Ramanathapuram on Sunday. The scores: Maruthu Pandiar CC 80 in 21.3 overs (Java five for 18) bt Master Thunder CC 51 in 17 overs (Thievendran six for 16); Nehru CC 118 in 28.1 overs lost to KTKM CC 119 for five in 19 overs.
District-level cricket
The fourth annual Bhagat Singh memorial trophy district-level cricket tournament, organised jointly by Jaihindpuram Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Sports Association and Madurai District Cricket Association, will be held at Madura College ground on March 25, 26 and April 1 and 2. Jeppiar beats Sourashtra
Jeppiar Engineering College (Chennai) defeated Sourashtra College (Madurai) 73-44 in a league encounter at the ninth State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament for the Krishnaswamy Naidu Memorial Trophy at the Jamal Mohammed College courts in Tiruchi on Tuesday. Udayakumar and Sreejith scored 21 and 14 points respectively for Jeppiar Engineering College. Adiganesan scored 20 points for Sourashtra College. In another match, Loyola College (Chennai) beat Bishop Heber College (Tiruchi) 60-28. Ravendran and Vimal scored 16 and 10 points respectively for the winning team.
BHEL CCFC posts win
BHEL Community Centre FC defeated RK MFC 3-0 in the Tiruchi District Football Association first division league match at the Bishop Heber HSS ground in Tiruchi on Tuesday. Lingesh scored a brace, while Ramesh completed the tally for the winner. The match between Globe FC and Jothi Malleables FC ended in a goalless draw.
Railway Mixed HSS triumphs
Railway Mixed HSS defeated SBIOA 2-0 in the final to win the hockey title at the monthly sports competition conducted by Tiruchi unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at the Anna Stadium in Tiruchi recently. In the semifinals, Railway Mixed HSS edged out Khajamian HSS 2-1, while SBIOA beat Santa Maria MHSS 1-0.
Syed Mohammed to replace Yo Mahesh
Syed Mohammed of Jolly Rovers, will replace Globe Trotters' V. Yo Mahesh in the Tamil Nadu team, for the inter-State all-India one-day tournament, to be held at Kanpur and Lucknow, from March 17 to 21. K.L. Balajee will be the manager, while B. Arun will be the coach.
Murali shines
An unbeaten 82 by S. Murali enabled Presidency College CC (Chennai) score a four-wicket win over SFCC (Erode) in the Sundaram memorial State-level cricket tournament in Thindal on Tuesday. The scores: Velalar CE&T (Thindal) 166 in 30 overs (C. Bala Kumaresh 53) lost to Davaram Sports & SC (Salem) 167 for eight in 24.2 overs (Karthick four for 12); SFCC (Erode) 201 in 29.5 overs (Sathyamoorthi 68, O. Sushil Kumar Varma 43) lost to Presidency College (Chennai) 202 for six in 29 overs (S. Murali 82 not out); Railway Colony 265 in 29.3 overs (Srinivasan 80, V. Sathish 41, Dhandapani 40) bt Kalki Sports Club (Kangeyam) 124 in 21.3 overs.
Kongunadu wins thriller
Kongunadu College of Arts and Science posted a thrilling one-run win over Krishna College of Art and Science and entered the semifinals of the 14th inter-collegiate cricket tournament for the SNR ever rolling trophy in Coimbatore on Tuesday. The scores: Kongunadu CAS 120 for nine in 25 overs (Arun four for 24) bt Krishna CAS 119 in nine in 25 overs.
