Runway at Gannavaram airport to be extended

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Union Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel has asked the officials concerned to initiate steps for increasing the length of runway, installation of fuel refilling station and instrumental landing system at Gannavaram airport.

Disclosing this here on Tuesday, local MP Lagadapati Rajagopal said that he had called on the Minister on Monday and explained to him the necessity to address the aforesaid needs in the airport in view of the prospective growth in air traffic. If the length of the existing 6,000-ft runway was increased to 7,500 feet, it would facilitate landing of Boeing and other big aircraft.

Re-fuelling station

Installation of a re-fuelling station would enhance the operation of aircraft to the city by different service providers. There were many occasions when flights were being cancelled or rescheduled due to lack of visibility and fog.

To overcome this problem, the MP urged the Union Minister to have the instrumental landing system set up in the airport. As several operators were intending to operate flight services to the city, the Union Minister wanted the officials to take immediate steps to meet the requirements so that the city could be connected to many important places in the country.
