Relief announced for sheep-rearers

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Government on Tuesday announced several measures, including insurance cover towards relief for sheep and goat rearers who suffered due to the recent death of lakhs of animals.

Other steps include sanction of subsidised sheep units, loans at three per cent interest and sanction of Rs. 5 crores from the federation. Government promised to consider the rearers' demand for amending the act to provide for compensation to the rearers.

The measures were announced after discussions among Ministers N. Raghuveera Reddy and G. Surya Rao and Rearers' Association representatives and legislators. The Ministers said the insurance scheme to cover two crore sheep would be implemented from April 2. A press release quoted the Ministers as saying that discussions would be held on March 20 with the Collectors on the modalities of implementing the decisions.
