PALAKKAD: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has taken up the issue of `forcing out of existence' of the Palakkad unit of Indian Telephone Industries Limited (ITI) by not allotting it sizable portion of reservation quota of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) valued at Rs.20,000 crores.
Letter to Centre
In a letter to Union Minister of Communication and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran on Tuesday, the Chief Minister has demanded "allocation of sizable portion of the reservation quota of GSM valued at Rs.20,000 crores to Palakkad ITI.'' He also sought the merger of ITI Palakkad unit with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and keep the unit as a manufacturing arm of the BSNL in the South. The letter also supported the demands of the Joint Action Committee of ITI Limited, Palakkad, such as the allotment of a major share of Rs.10,000 crores National ID Card Project over a period of five years and acceptance of E10MM manufacturing and ensure a minimum order of one million lines for the next three years. Action Council leaders V.B. Raju, K. Karunakaran and Prasanna Kumar met the Chief Minister at Thiruvanathapuram on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum to him which said that ITI, Palakkad unit has been making profit since its inception in 1976 except during 1995-96.
