Sushma Swaraj with Shivraj Singh Chauhan at the Vidhan Sabha in Bhopal on Tuesday.
BHOPAL: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday filed her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha seat along with former Union Minister Vikram Verma and two other BJP candidates -- Narain Singh Kesri and Anusuiya Uike. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, State BJP president Satyanarain Jatiya, several State Ministers and senior party leaders were present during the occasion. While Mr. Verma and Mr. Kesri have been re-nominated from Madhya Pradesh, Ms. Swaraj is an outsider, who recently got her name entered into the voters' list of Bhopal. Talking to journalists here, Ms. Swaraj praised Bhopal's beauty and said that her links with the State capital were more than two decades old. Ms. Uike represents the tribals. She was earlier a member of the National Commission for Women and just before her nomination, she resigned as Chairperson of the State Anusuchit Janjati Ayog. A BJP spokesman told this Correspondent that the party High Command had consulted the State party unit before finalising the names of party candidates. Elections are being held for five Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh that are falling vacant on April 2. The BJP, with more than two-third majority in the State Assembly, is sure to win four seats. For the fifth seat, the Congress Party would be announcing its candidate after Holi. The last date for filing nominations is March 17
