NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma and Lok Sabha members from Delhi on Tuesday urged Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy to initiate steps immediately to regularise unauthorised colonies and expand the "Lal Dora" areas of villages in order to meet the needs of the expanding population. In a letter to Mr. Reddy, the Congress leaders stated that the promise for regularisation of unauthorised colonies and expanding the limits of urban and rural villages was made in the Congress manifesto and the party was duty-bound to fulfil these promises. "As you are well aware, a majority of Delhi residents live in unauthorised colonies and urban villages. A promise was made in the December 2003 Assembly polls that they would be regularised on the pattern of the exercise done by the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1976-77 and now the time had come to fulfil this promise,'' the letter states. Apart from Mr. Sharma, the signatories to the letter include Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibbal, former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar, R.K. Anand and Krishna Tirath.
