Parts of city experience blackout

CHENNAI: Several parts of North and Central Chennai blacked out on Tuesday afternoon following a power trip in North Chennai Thermal Power Plant of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

Sources in the TNEB said a disturbance occurred in the power line near Tondiarpet around 1.30 p.m. It led to a cascading effect that tripped power units at the plant. They said power supply was restored in a phased manner starting an hour after the disruption and totally by 6.30 p.m. The power cut affected business, institutions and residences in north and Central parts of Chennai. Traffic management also suffered as most of the traffic signals went blank from afternoon. Several traffic policemen were on the road regulating the traffic.
