Police trace second car in double murder case

Staff Reporter

Car owners being questioned; movements being verified

NEW DELHI: The second car in which Anuratha Mahajan, one of the victims in the Siddharatha Enclave double murder case reported this past Saturday, had returned to her house on that fateful evening was brought to the Capital from Roorkee in Uttaranchal on Tuesday. The occupant of the car was being questioned about his movements.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anil Shukla said the car was registered in the name of a transport company at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and had come from Roorkee. The occupant of the car, Deepak, has been brought to the Capital along with the vehicle for questioning.

The police are not yet sure if the visits of Chanakya Verma, who had come to meet Ms. Anuratha and her mother, Swarana Mahajan, in another Maruti car earlier on Saturday evening and that of Deepak had anything to do with the murder. "We are trying to ascertain their claims and verify their movements. If is difficult at this point to say if the visits were linked to the murder," said Mr. Shukla.

On Monday, the police had recovered the Maruti car, which had entered the colony around 5-30 p.m. on Saturday and in which Ms. Anuratha had left around 7-30 p.m. She had returned in the second car along with Deepak, who too left within minutes, around 10 p.m.

Police sources said Chanakya, a businessman, had himself approached the police on Monday when he saw the registration number of his car being flashed in the media.

The police are also trying to ascertain if these two men had approached Ms. Anuratha in connection with the marriage proposal she had posted on a matrimonial website. "There is, however, nothing concrete to say that the proposal was linked to the incident in any way," said Mr. Shukla.

While robbery has been prima facie ruled out as a motive, the police are investigating the case from all possible angles. They are also looking into the possibility of property dispute being behind the incident. The police had also questioned the maids and the security guards earlier.

Meanwhile, the post-mortem on the bodies of the two deceased was carried out at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. Further investigations in the case are on.
