Woman commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself to death in her house at Paharganj in Central Delhi on Tuesday.

According to the police, Anupama, wife of Arjun, a resident of Paharganj, hanged herself from the ceiling fan with the help of a rope around 2-45 p.m. At the time, nobody was present in the house. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Anupama was married to Arjun for the past nine years and the couple had two sons, aged eight and seven. Arjun, the police said, was an alcoholic, and the couple used to have frequent fights over the issue. They suspect that Anupama may have got fed up with the frequent fights and decided to take the extreme step.

Held for cheating

NEW DELHI: The managing director of a telephone company who had been evading arrest for the past couple of years in a case of allegedly cheating Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi police.

In 2003, the EOW had registered a case following a complaint from MTNL about a telephone company cheating them of Rs. 2.15 crores. In 1991, MTNL and M/S Omnitel Industries had entered into a contract under which Omnitel was supposed to install and maintain payphones at various places in the Capital for MTNL at a commission of 20 paise for phones with local facilities and 40 paise for phones with STD facilities. Omnitel was to charge Re. 1 per call from the customers.

As per the contract, MTNL generated the bill and gave it to Omnitel after adjusting the commission, while Omnitel was supposed to deposit the bills to MTNL after collecting money from the phone users. However, from January 1991 to March 1993, Omnitel made Rs. 2.15 crores but did not deposit the money.

Following the registration of the case, the managing director, P.L. Ananth Ram, went underground and evaded arrest. A few days ago, the police managed to trace his hideout. Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Prabhakar said the accused had let loose two German shepherd dogs in the compound of his hideout to prevent anybody from coming in. However, the police managed to arrest him on Monday.
