dated March 16, 1956: Chairman pulls up member

An alleged incorrect reply given by a Minister at question hour in the Rajya Sabha on March 13 was sought to be raised as a privilege motion on March 14 by a Communist member, Mr. N.D.M. Prasada Rao. The member complained that the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture had given "a totally false answer" about irrigation under the Tungabhadra project. The Chairman, Dr. Radhakrishnan, said that if members wanted to raise privilege issues they should first meet him and tell him about the subject and not raise it on the floor of the House. "It is also better to avoid expressions like false. There is another word called incorrect," the Chairman added, amidst loud laughter. He declined to permit Mr. Bhupesh Gupta (Communist) to raise another issue about an alleged leakage of the Insurance Ordinance before it was issued.
