`No more construction in Perur, Avilala tanks'

Staff Reporter

The counsel for Intellectual Forum explains the Supreme Court verdict which was given different interpretations

TIRUPATI: The Supreme Court has categorically disallowed further constructions in Perur and Avilala tanks situated on the outskirts of Tirupati and that they should not be used for housing or similar activities.

In the wake of divergent views emerging due to `subjective interpretation' of the verdict by a section of the national media, the counsel, farmers and intellectuals (petitioner) sought clarification on the intricacies of the judgment.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday, G. Ramakrishna Prasad, counsel for Intellectual Forum, which filed a PIL in the Supreme Court after the same was quashed in the High Court, explained the sequence of events.

Taking exception to the Congress party closing the Avilala tank for holding its plenary meet and the handing over of Perur tank to TTD for developing a housing colony, the forum moved the High Court with a PIL in early '90, but lost. It then moved the Supreme Court with support of farmers and scientists.

On the basis of a report by a panel of the Central Groundwater Board, the Supreme Court gave its verdict last month that the tanks should be maintained as water bodies.
