TIRUCHI: Industries are responding positively to the request of Bharathidasan University to create 25 endowments of Rs. 5 lakh each and transfer the benefits to deserving research scholars, as part of its silver jubilee initiatives this year. Projected as a strong dimension of industry-institute partnership, the endowment scheme provides for funding out of interest proceeds, research expenses of the chosen candidates on a monthly basis, till they complete their projects. Meritorious candidates, irrespective of their domain of research - humanities or science, are likely to be provided with not less than Rs.4,000 a month. The university's logic is that industries will grab the opportunity to be a part of the vibrant higher education system, from which the latter gain significantly in terms of readymade human resource. "Participation of 40 short-listed industries was sought for the purpose and the response has been encouraging," said the Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu. The university plans to finalise the endowments on a `first-come-first-serve' basis. The first industry to create the endowment is Dalmia Cements (Bharat) Limited. The university was quick to respond by christening the gesture as `Dalmia Cements (Bharat) Endowment Fund'. Similar has been the response of affiliated colleges to the university's plan to establish a Digital Library at the Khajamalai Campus at a cost of Rs. 1.25 crore. The university has identified a group representing managements of reputed institutions, with proven credentials of administration, to set the process rolling. Once the library is established, affiliated colleges will manage it on a turnkey basis. The plan of the university is to provide connectivity between the digital library and those in the affiliated colleges round-the-clock. A provision has been for embossing the names of colleges contributing sums of Rs.1 lakh and above in the foyer of the digital library, said Prof. Thangamuthu.
