TIRUPATI: The TDP's road show, `Palle Palle ku Desam', believed to have got underway from Wednesday in the home district of party supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, was a low-key affair. The programme was conceived to breathe fresh life into the otherwise inert rank and file of the party after the severe drubbing it received in the recent municipal elections. The party's position in the district in terms of its strength in the Assembly, Parliament and in other bodies is not all that bad. Against the Congress' ten MLAs, the TDP's strength in the district is five, besides having a Lok Sabha and a Rajya Sabha member. Further, the largest municipality in the district, Tirupati, which is waiting in the wings to be elevated to the status of Corporation, is also under its control and a couple of its senior district leaders are on the TDP's Polit Bureau as well. But still, the party high command's Statewide call for a `Palle Palleku Desam' became a damp squib in Naidu's own home ground due to a marked disinterest and indifference among the district top brass for some reason or other. This is in sharp contrast to the great zeal and zest exhibited by the two left parties and the BJP which have just concluded their similar road-shows and jaunts across the villages in the district in the run up to the ensuing panchayat elections. The State top brass of the parties have either flagged-off their `yatras' or joined them en route one day in course of their trek along the countryside which besides giving the programme a publicity hype also gave tremendous morale boost to the party cadres.
