JAIPUR: Arun Singh, a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and scion of the Bharatpur royal family, died at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi early on Wednesday. Mr. Singh, who was elected from Deeg in Bharatpur district on Indian National Lok Dal ticket, had been ailing for some time. A bachelor, he was 58. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, her son and Member of Parliament from Jhalawar, Dushyant Singh, Rajasthan Health Minister Dijambher Singh, Raghuveer Singh Kaushal, MP from Kota, the cousins of the deceased Vishvendra Singh, Bharatpur MP, and Krishnendra Kaur, MLA, Congress leaders, Hari Singh and R.P.Sharma, Janata Dal leader, Pandit Ramkishen and INLD MLA Vijay Bansal were among thousands of persons who attended Mr. Singh's funeral at Bharatpur in the afternoon. Mr. Singh was accorded a State funeral. Anirudh Singh, son of Vishvendra Singh, lit the funeral pyre at Eglaisa Khas, a property of the former royals from where Jeevan Nirman Sansthan, a centre for the deaf and dumb children, presently operates. Arun Singh was the son of the late Maharaja Bachu Singh, the first Member of Parliament from Bharatpur. He represented Deeg in the State Assembly four times -- every time, except in 1998, fighting as an Independent. Known for his gregarious nature and fun-loving habits, Arun Singh was mostly found in the company of commoners. Embroiled in litigation over family property, most often he had lived out of a suitcase whether in Jaipur or Bharatpur.
