Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in Nungambakkam and Government Press (Mint) areas on March 17 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m for maintenance work.

Blood donation

The Blood Bank of Indian Red Cross Society conducted a blood donation camp on March 13 at Sri Sairam Polytechnic College in West Tambaram. The camp was organised by YRC programme officer Tirunavukkarasu.

College union valedictory

Shrimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College for Women celebrated union valedictory on March 14. IIT- Madras professor Devadas Menon was the chief guest. He spoke on the importance of character development.

Free `well women' check-up

BRS Hospital in Nungambakkam conducted a free `well women' check-up on March 3 and 12 as part of International Women's Day celebrations. More than 150 women were screened and tests such as Pap smear and ultrasound scan were conducted.

Eye screening

Mahavir International Chennai Metro in association with Sri Jain Sangh conducted a free eye checkup and surgery on March 12 at SVS Jain Bhavan in New Washermanpet. About 500 persons were screened and cataract surgery performed on 53 patients. Spectacles would be distributed on March 19.

Health programme

Hindu Mission Hospital conducted the `Kannappar free eye camp' at Vandalur on March 15. More than 100 persons were screened and 25 were referred for free IOL surgery.

Temple cleaning

Volunteers of Smile cleaned the Besant Nagar Ashtalakshmi temple on March 15. They also undertook cleaning operations at Chidambaranar temple in Choolai on March 12. Last week volunteers organised a free medical camp for children at Aminjikarai. More than 80 children were screened and medicines distributed.

Two held for possessing heroin

Officers of the NIB CID arrested two persons and recovered 1.5 kg of heroin from them.

A press release said following specific information, the officials intercepted the two persons A. Rajan (39) of Mumbai and A. Sekar James (50) of Sathankulam, Tuticorin district, near Wall Tax Road and seized the heroin from them. They bought the contraband in Mumbai to be sold to a Sri Lankan in Chennai. The two have been remanded to custody, the release added.
