KOLKATA: Hopes of forging an anti-Left "mahajot" (grand alliance) for the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal have virtually fizzled out with the Congress deciding on Wednesday to contest, along with its allies, all the 294 seats in the State. The Congress leadership, however, is still willing to give the Trinamool Congress "time" till the filing of nomination papers to disassociate itself from the Bharatiya Janata Party if there is to be any electoral understanding with it. The first of the five-phase elections in the State is on April 17. The Congress is leading an eight-party alliance, the United Democratic Front, launched earlier with an eye on the elections. The Trinamool's refusal to part ways with the BJP, its senior partner in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has been a bone of contention with the Congress.
