NAMAKKAL: The Collector and District Election Officer, V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam has appealed to the political parties in the district to strictly abide by the model code of conduct.

Cooperation sought

Convening an all-party meeting held here on Thursday, he asked the political parties in the district to remove cutouts, hoardings, banners, posters and graffiti on public and private buildings and in various other places on their own. If the parties failed, the administration would remove them and the expenditure would be included in the contestant's election account.

The Collector asked the political parties to inform the police in advance while conducting public meetings and processions. These activities should be organised as per the instructions given by the Election Commission of India. Mr. Nayagam asked the political parties to co-operate with the district administration in the photographing of voters for the issue of Electors' Photo Identity Card (EPIC).

He said the administration had issued EPICs to 70 per cent of the voters so far. The remaining 30 per cent would be covered during the ongoing photographing exercise. The administration was issuing the EPICs immediately after photographing the voters. Hence people could collect their EPIC a few minutes after taking the photograph at the designated photo locations itself.

Representatives of the political parties asked the officials to give more publicity to the photographing process in rural areas. Representatives of various political parties including All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Pattali Makkal Katchi and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam attended the meeting. The District Revenue Officer, V. Rajaraman and Superintendent of Police, C. Krishnapillai were present.
