TRIBUTE TO AN ARTISTE: Painter M.V. Devan, poet Balachandran Chullikkad and writer C.V. Balakrishnan at a function organised to commemorate director G. Aravindan in Kochi on Wednesday. Photo: Mahesh Harilal
KOCHI: G. Aravindan always let his work speak for him. So, on the 15th anniversary, it was a natural choice for his friends to remember him with a couple of films one by him and one on him. The monthly programme of `One artist, One work' at Orthic Creative Centre was dedicated to the memory of this great filmmaker. "We had planned to screen his film Thampu and hold a discussion. Since the prints were not available, we had to screen these two films," said senior artist T. Kaladharan, who has converted the top floor of his residence into the Orthic Creative Centre. The films screened on Wednesday were Aravindan's documentary of philosopher J. Krishnamurthy, titled Seer Who Walks Alone and Small World and Big Person, a film by Shaji N. Karun on Aravindan and his works. Earlier, talking at a function presided by M.V. Devan, writer C.V. Balakrishnan said that Aravindan had a rare trait of courage to trek the rarely followed track. He said this after comparing the rich repertoire of Aravindan to the stagnation of creativity that has set in in contemporary Malayalam film. "No two films by Aravindan were similar. It demanded a high creative courage to differ from previous works and to challenge the existing norms of films," he said. He was followed by poet Balachandran Chullikad and S. Gopalakrishnan, with their personal memories about the great filmmaker and greater friend that was Aravindan. Balachandran Chullikad was the protagonist in Pokkuveyil (Twilight). Gopalakrishnan had memories of Aravindan dating back to the period when he joined Rubber Board. It was a long association that lasted till the last day of Aravindan. Memories, when it is about Aravindan, will never die for his friends.
