Deputy Inspector General (Northern Range) V. Shantharam is receptive to the traffic-related issues in the region. He has taken the initiative to plan a series of drives at Kannur aimed at creating a slow and careful driving culture. "We are short-sighted in our road traffic planning, while in developed countries, they plan for 50 years," the DIG said while announcing the safe drive campaign recently. Asked why the police were not taking action against those indulging in rash driving and other violations of traffic rules, the DIG was more forthright. Stringent enforcement of road rules would attract public criticism. He, however, promised a class by traffic and driving experts for policemen on traffic rules to sensitise them to the need to enforce rules as part of the drive to bring down the accident rate.
