Unreasonable

The U.S.' reservations over Russia's decision to supply low enriched uranium for the Tarapur plant is unreasonable because the reactors are in the danger of being shut down.

In fact, India's request to the U.S. for supply of uranium was not granted because Congress has not yet given the go-ahead to the civilian nuclear deal. Washington's attitude shows it wants full control over India's nuclear programme.

H.R. Bapu Satyanarayana,
Mysore

The waste created by nuclear power plants will stay with this planet for several millennia. Besides, there are the dangers of leaks and contamination of the atmosphere and waterways. Why has India with its enormous pool of brainpower done nothing to develop alternative and truly renewable energy sources?

Indian politicians are on an ego trip seeking superpower status. The nuclear contest with a backward country like Pakistan will debilitate the more advanced India.

J.R. Murthy,
Colton, California

Defending the civilian nuclear treaty with India, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wrote in the Washington Post (March 13): " ... our agreement with India will make our future more secure, by expanding the reach of the international nonproliferation regime. The International Atomic Energy Agency would gain access to India's civilian nuclear program ..." What about India's military nuclear programme?

And what about us, India's next-door neighbours, with none of whom it has particularly good relations? Will we not be justified in looking elsewhere for security?

Col. (retd.) Riaz Jafri,
Rawalpindi
