ERODE: There is an increase in the number of accidents during daytime and the victims are mostly youths, said the Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan, at a seminar on Road Safety Awareness conducted by the Police Department on Wednesday. Careless driving was the main reason for most of the accidents, he said. Many youths were using cell phones while riding motorcycles leading to fatal accidents. Hence, he wanted the drivers, especially two-wheeler riders, to avoid cell phones while travelling. The Superintendent of Police said last year, 2,497 accidents were reported in Erode district, of which 243 took place between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., 371 between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, 364 between 12 noon and 3 p.m. and between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., 408 accidents took place. Compared to this, the number of accidents, which took place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. was normal. The police were investigating the reasons for the increase in accidents during daytime, he added.
Traffic rules
He said in 2001, 479 fatal accidents were reported in Erode district and in 2005, it was 498. He admitted that there was an increase in the number of fatal accidents and attributed it to non-compliance of traffic rules and rash driving. He appealed to the drivers to ply vehicles within 60 - 65 km speed range on highways and minimum speed limit within the town. The Superintendent of Police appealed to the people to strictly follow traffic rules.
