INDIAN WELLS: Third-ranked Andy Roddick was upset by Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 at the Pacific Life Open on Wednesday, failing to reach at least the quarterfinals for the first time.
The top two seeds, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, had no such problems against Frenchmen.
Leander Paes and Martin Damm of the Czech Republic went down to the Russian pair of Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the second round of the men's doubles event.
In the women's doubles quarterfinals, Sania Mirza and her Japanese partner Ai Sugiyama lost to the Eleni Daniilidou (Greece) and Anabel Medina Garrigues (Spain) 6-2, 6-3.
Sania and Sugiyama had actually won their second round match against Cara Black (Zimbabwe) and Rennae Stubbs of Australia 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(8).
