Army action against officer for `negligence'

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Army has taken disciplinary action against an officer for alleged negligence in duplication of classified documents relating to the India-China border operations.

The action followed a probe into an espionage case in which a Junior Commissioned Officer was arrested for allegedly passing on sensitive information to foreign intelligence agencies through his father, a retired serviceman.

An Army spokesperson said the officer, Col. Deepak Raina, was not involved in the espionage but was being charged for negligence in letting Lance Naik Javed Khan access confidential information.

Lance Naik Khan was arrested by the Guwahati police and sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment for alleged espionage.

Col. Raina was the Colonel General (Staff) at the headquarters of the Tezpur-based 4 Corps when Lance Naik Khan, a clerk in his office, was arrested for passing on classified documents, copies of which were recovered from the former's father, a former Indian Air Force sergeant.
