VELLORE: Vellore Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan visited the Government Hospital in Tirupattur on Wednesday and enquired into the complaint that a woman, who delivered a male child, developed complications and died on Tuesday night owing to "improper treatment" for refusing to pay the bribe allegedly demanded by the hospital staff. Mallika (30), wife of Munusamy of Reddiyur village near Alangayam was staying in her sister's in Velan Nagar, Tirupattur, when she developed labour pain and was admitted to the GH, Tirupattur where she delivered a male child on Tuesday. When the relatives reported to the hospital staff that she was bleeding excessively, the latter allegedly demanded bribe for the treatment. But the relatives refused to pay any amount.
Relatives stage agitation
On hearing her death on Tuesday night, the relatives staged an agitation on the hospital premises on Wednesday, and refused to take possession of the body. The Collector who was in Tirupattur on an official visit went to the hospital and enquired into the complaint and promised to take action against the staff if they were found guilty. Later, the relatives took possession of the body.
Collector orders probe
Mr. Gopalakrishnan told The Hindu that he has deputed the Joint Director of Medical Services to visit the hospital on Thursday and make an enquiry into the complaint. Action will be taken against the erring employees based on the report of the Joint Director, he said.
