World Consumer Rights Day celebrated

Bid to improve awareness

PONDICHERRY: A number of consumer welfare organisations in Pondicherry conducted special programmes on Wednesday to mark the celebration of the World Consumer Rights Day. The department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs also associated itself with it. The Pudhuvai Amarar Rajiv Gandhi Consumer organisation president K. Sankaralingam said in a release that a mobile propaganda to generate awareness among the people about their rights and the statutory protection available for them was also launched as part of the celebrations.

Among those who felicitated included the Director, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, K Elumalai, Government Employees Federation leader T R Seshachalam and delegates of various consumer welfare outfits and leaders of public opinion.

The Pondicherry unit of Consumer Association held special programmes on the occasion at a function in Kurumbapet and among those who addressed included the president of the Association S. Vaithianathan, its secretary P. Muthukrishnan and also officials of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department and also officers of the Block Development.

The president of the Voice of Consumer R. Alagiri said the day was celebrated with special address by teachers of a Government higher secondary school.

Mr Alagiri said that a special seminar and symposium was also held. Special music programme also added to the the celebration.

The president of the Pondicherry based National Community Welfare and Consumer Protection Cell P. Uthireswaran said a question answer session was held by his organisation in Jawahar Bhavan in Lawspet. The Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs was among those who addressed the participants.

Demonstration on the various features of weights and measures was also conducted to bring to focus the attention and care the consumers should show while purchasing commodities.

Commissioner of Oulgaret Municipality D. Thiagarajan and the Block Development officer of Oulgaret Mr. Selvaraj were among those spoke.
