Members of Eleventh Assembly include many record-holders

Special Correspondent

Agriculture Minister K. R. Gouri the longest serving legislator

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Many of the members of the Eleventh Assembly, which had its last session on Wednesday, are record-holders.

Agriculture Minister K. R. Gouri remains the longest serving legislator. She has been a member of 12 Assemblies since 1952. She is also the eldest member of the outgoing House.

Revenue Minister K. M. Mani has the distinction of being the member who had been elected from the same constituency maximum number of times. He represented the Palai constituency ten times.

He is also the Minister who served for the longest period. He presented the largest number of Budgets as Finance Minister (eight times).

Vakkom Purushothaman set a record as the person who has served as the Speaker for the longest period before becoming the Finance Minister.

R. Balakrishna Pillai, who turns 72 next month, was the youngest member to enter the portals of the House. He was elected to the Second Assembly in 1960 from Pathanapuram. He continuously represented Kottarakara from 1977 (seven times).

Vote margins

The 11th Assembly also has the members who had got the highest and lowest margins of votes ever in the elections. Member of the CPI (M) P. Jayarajan, who entered the House in 2005 through a byelection, had a margin of 45,865 votes. On the other hand, the RSP leader A. A. Azeez won in 2001 just for a margin of five votes, that too as per a court verdict.

Besides, this House had three of the shortest sessions - one-day sessions held on September 16, 2004; December 1, 2004 and November 21, 2005. (The Ninth Assembly too had a one-day session).

Amidst such records, the Assembly leaves behind more than 50 published legislations and Bills to replace Ordinances that could not be considered by the House. These would now lapse.

The House never saw one of the Ministers who came to power during its tenure. President of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) K. Muraleedharan had to resign after becoming the Electricity Minister, as he could not get elected to the House.
