`Implement election code of conduct strictly'

Staff Reporter

Collector Atul Anand tells officials in Tirunelveli district

TIRUNELVELI: Collector Atul Anand convened a meeting of officials at the Collectorate here on Wednesday to sensitise them to election code of conduct and implement it strictly in their respective areas.

Addressing the meeting, he said the code of conduct had come into force since March 1, as per the announcement made by the Election Commission. Government officials and policemen should strictly implement the code without any compromise.

Since disbursal of welfare measures such as distribution of free house-site pattas to the needy and conduct of grievance day meetings had been prohibited, there would be no room for such activities and no new projects should be inaugurated. However, ongoing projects, which actually commenced before March 1, could be continued.

As use of official cars, fitted with siren and revolving lamps by ministers and heads of civic bodies had been banned, officials should execute it.

New appointments during the run-up to the elections to be held on May 8 and transfer of officials on election duty had been forbidden.

"Those who dare to defy the regulations imposed will have to face the music. Banners, cut outs, posters and hoardings put up by political parties in public and private places will be removed and the expenditure incurred on this exercise would be collected from the parties concerned. This spending would be added to the electoral expenditure of the candidate involved," Mr. Atul Anand warned.

District Revenue Officer G. Loganathan, Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli, Anand Kumar Somani, Corporation Commissioner D. Chandrasekaran, Revenue Divisional Officers Durairaj (Tirunelveli), Anbazhagan (Cheranmahadevi) and Ramanasaraswathi (Tenkasi), Assistant Director (Special Panchayats) Vijay Kumar, Assistant Commissioners of Police, commissioners of various municipalities attended the meeting.
