GULBARGA: A total of 40,500 students appeared for the SSLC examination at 114 centres in Gulbarga and Yadgir education districts on Thursday amidst complaints of malpractices and lack of basic amenities at the centres. In some centres, students were not provided with benches and desks. They were forced to write the examination squatting on the floor. There were many complaints of people trying to help students in copying answers at some centres despite the prohibitory orders. Policemen deployed at examination centres in rural areas of Afzalpur, Surpur, Chincholi and Chitapur taluks had a tough time in controlling such people. The police arrested 10 persons on the charge of helping students to copy answers in Gulbarga education district. According to information received here, the vigilance squads constituted by the Education Department and in-charge Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey conducted surprise checks and expelled 14 students from Thursday's examination and debarred two students. While the squad led by the Deputy Commissioner expelled 10 students, those led by the Deputy Director of Public Instruction and other officials expelled four and debarred two in the city. Nine students were expelled at the Hinugulambika High School, four at the Vijaya Vidyalaya High School and one at the Farhan High School here. The squads debarred one student each at the Nagareshwar High School and the Kamalapur Government High School. Official sources said 86 examination centres are located in Gulbarga, Jewargi, Afzalpur, Aland, Chincholi and Chitapur taluks under Gulbarga education district. There are 28 centres in Shahapur, Surpur, Yadgir and Sedam taluks under Yadgir Education District. While 32,202 students appeared for the SSLC examination at the centres in Gulbarga education district, 8,320 appeared in Yadgir education district.
Seven debarred
Bijapur staff correspondent reports: Seven students were debarred after they were found copying in some centres in Bijapur district on Thursday. Deputy Director of Public Instruction Bhaskar Bhat told The Hindu that three students at the Huvinahipparagi centre and four at Sindagi were caught copying in the examination. Twenty-two vigilance squads have been formed at the taluk-level. Besides, seven mobile squads have been formed at the district level to conduct surprise checks.
Three in Raichur
Raichur staff correspondent reports: Three students, two from the Government Junior College in Hutti and one from the Government Junior College in Lingsugur, were debarred. According to official sources, two students each in Raichur and Deodurga taluks were sent out from the examination halls for malpractice. Hiremath, supervisor of examinations at a school in Arkera village of Deodurga taluk, was withdrawn from duty for dereliction of duty.
