They showed willingness to compete and had the sheer determination to succeed. They never allowed physical disability to dampen their spirits and instead braved the odds at the Regional level sports competition for differently-abled athletes conducted by Tiruchi unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at the Anna Stadium here recently.

The events conducted in sub-junior, junior, senior and open categories saw participation of more than 350 athletes from seven districts — Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Pudukottai and Perambalur.

Former international high jumper, Nallusamy Annavi, who gave prizes to the winners, said, "There is a need to encourage these athletes and this is a step in the right direction."

Excited by the enthusiasm showed by the participants, he said such competitions should be held at the district level on a regular basis. Senior Regional Manager, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), G. Mohan, commended the efforts of the participants and said these athletes had proved that physical disability was no bar for an athlete with an indomitable spirit.

District Sports Officer Paneerselvam was present.
