NAGERCOIL: A theatre workshop was jointly organised by the Black Theatre, Chennai, and Rural Education and Development Society in Sivaganga district, at Stella Mary's Convent in Kanyakumari for the benefit of tsunami-affected fisherfolk. More than 50 persons, including volunteers of various non-governmental organisations participated. The six-day workshop was meant to provide psychosocial care to the tsunami-affected fisherwomen, orphans and semi-orphans. The volunteers were explained on measures to prevent such a tragedy in the future by growing trees and raisingmangrove forests in coastal areas to save the marine wealth as well as to minimise nature's fury. These trained volunteers would stage dramas in rural areas to create awareness among the fishermen community, said Suresh Dharma, Director, Black Theatre. The Black Theatre evolved as a means of express protest against injustice. Actors of street theatre do not require make-up and they not be essentially actors. They were actually communicators. Wooden sticks and pieces of clothes and sometimes even the traditional drum (parai) were used, he said. Through voice the performers should be able to arrest people's attention, said Suresh Dharma.
