HYDERABAD: V. Lavanya of Hyderabad clinched the gold in the 12th Federation Cup National cross-country championship clocking 22 minutes, 47 seconds in Nasik, according to information received here. Sangeeta Yadav of Uttar Pradesh (22 min, 52 sec) and I. Devi of Manipur (22 min, 53 sec) were second and third respectively.
Felicitation for APOA chief
The A.P. Olympic Association will felicitate its president and MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on March 19 for being nominated by the Indian Olympic Association as a member of the Indian delegation for the ongoing Commonwealth Games. According to APOA secretary L. Venkatram Reddy, the function would be held at A.P. Olympic Bhavan at 11:00 a.m.
Sepak Takraw championship
The annual MCH Open sepak takraw championship will be organised at Victory Playground from Friday. Many well-known outfits from the twin cities will take part in the event, which will be inaugurated by mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy. MLA M. Mukesh will preside while deputy mayor G. Subhash Chanderji and corporator M. Shankar Yadav will be the guests of honour.
Easy for Electrical Loco Shed
Electrical Loco Shed defeated Operations Department by eight wickets in the inter-department tournament for the second Divisional Railway Manager Cup at the Railway Stadium in Vijayawada on Thursday. In another match, G.V. Vasantha Rao's whirlwind knock of 65 from 44 balls helped Electrical (maintenance) score 133 for eight in 20 overs. However, the run chase by the Commercial Department was hampered due to a sudden downpour and the umpires decided to resume the match on Friday. The scores: Operations Department 104 in 20 overs lost to Electrical Loco Shed 107 for two in 14.3 overs.
Good knock by Sher Singh
Sher Singh's fine knock of 85 (11x4) followed by K.R.V. Roy's seven-wicket haul helped Naval Armament Depot beat Customs by 83 runs in the VDCA institutions league here on Thursday. The scores: NAD 209 in 41.5 overs (Sher Singh 85, B.V. Bhaskar six for 9) bt Customs 126 in 26.4 overs (W.D.R. Chandrasekhar 41, K.R.V. Roy seven for 46).
Chinna strikes
Chinna's double strike in the second half helped Diechmann F.C. beat Sri Polamamba F.C. (Chittivalasa) 2-0 in the district football league at Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
Waltair wins title
Waltair won the inaugural East Coast Railway inter-division football championship, beating host Khurda 1-0 in the final. P. Seetharama Raju scored the all-important goal 10 minutes after breather off a N. Ravikumar pass. N. Satish Kumar was declared player of the final, according to a press release on Thursday. Waltair Railway Divisional Manager S.V. Arya, Additional DRM P.C. Nayak, Sports Officer and Senior DCM C. Venugopal, and others congratulated the team.
Mohit, Chetan in final
Seventh-seeded Mohit Mayur of Tamil Nadu continued his dream run by ousting S.V. Abhishek of Andhra Pradesh 7-6, 6-4 to enter the final of the AITA super series under-14 tournament for boys and girls, at the IGMC stadium at Vijayawada on Thursday. In another semifinal, eighth-seeded Chetan Pandit of A.P. overcame State-mate N. Sai Karthik 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to set up the title clash with Mohit. In the girls' semifinals, top seed T. Nilaya struggled to beat Madhya Pradesh's Aishwariya Agarwal 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Rishika Sunkara of Delhi quelled the challenge of Maharashtra's Natallia Khaniejo 7-5, 6-2 to enter the final. In the girls' doubles, Delhi's Rishika Sunkara and Shweta will clash with Nova Patel of Gujarat and Arushi Sharma of Delhi in the final. A sudden downpour sent the proceedings for a toss and the organisers have decided to stage the doubles events on Friday. The scores: Boys (semifinals): Chetan Pandit (A.P.) bt N. Sai Karthik (A.P.) 2-6, 6-3, 6-4; Mohit Mayur (T.N.) bt S.V. Abhishek (A.P.) 7-6, 6-4.
NIET wins volleyball title
In the final, NIET defeated GMRIT, Srikakulam 22-25, 25-11, 15-11.
