BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Hockey Association (KSHA) is busy laying the groundwork to improve its control on the Hockey Stadium after the new Astroturf is laid. It has been facing a barrage of problems ever since the National Games was held here in 1997 and its relation with the Directorate of Youth Services, which presently calls the shots, is cold at its best. Narrating the problems faced by the KSHA, secretary K. Krishnamurthy said that very often matches scheduled at the stadium are delayed as the keys to the pump house were not available. He alleged that matches would often be scheduled by the DYSS (which is now the sanctioning authority) without informing the association often causing confusion. While acknowledging the contribution of the State Government in laying the Astroturf and the building at the stadium during the National Games, Krishnamurthy said that as the land was leased for 99 years to the KSHA and as the association was overseeing the staging of all the matches at the stadium, it should be able to stage its matches without approaching the DYSS every time. As the stadium has been sanctioned a new Astroturf pitch, the KSHA has drawn up a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding involving the Association, Sports Authority of India and the DYSS which would give the possession of the playing pitch to the State Hockey Association. Meanwhile, in an exhibition match played at the stadium on Thursday, Army XI defeated SAI 2-1. SAI took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to Varun Chinappa but Army XI tilted the scales with Rajesh (62nd) and Sunil Ekka (68th) scoring off penalty corners.
