FACOR employees stage dharna

VIZIANAGARAM: The police used mild force to control FACOR employees on the last day of their 84-hour dharna at the Collectorate on Thursday. They had a tough time when employees tried to push their way into the Collectorate. However, the situation eased after they were promised that talks between the ad hoc committee members of employees and the management would be arranged on March 18. The employees were demanding lifting of lay-off announced on October 1 last year. - Correspondent

Lifer for 17 in Chindukur murder case

KURNOOL: The Fifth Additional Sessions Court sentenced 17 persons to life in the Chindukur murder case on Thursday. The case was reviewed by the Sessions Court following the directive of the High Court and confirmed lifer for 17 people while acquitting five others.

According to reports, single window president Venkateswara Reddy was murdered at Chindukur on July 26, 1992. In retaliation, his supporters attacked and murdered four of their rivals the same day.

Officer-Employee Director of SBH

HYDERABAD: Harshavardhan Madabhushi of State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) has been appointed Officer-Employee Director of the bank. A press release said that he joined the bank in 1980 and promoted as officer in 1988. Mr. Harshavardhan is currently chairman of the SBH Officers' Association. - Staff Reporter

Sentenced to life imprisonment

KADAPA: Fast Track Court Judge T. Easwara Rao on Thursday sentenced a washerman Kannalur Gopal, 35, to life imprisonment for killing a widow.

Gopal of Diguvapalle village, who was already married and had four children, allegedly had an illicit relationship with a widowed washerwoman Venkata Lakshmamma of Sankepalle . The duo moved over to Saipet in Kadapa. An alcohol addict, Gopal fatally stabbed Lakshmamma with a dagger on April 11, 2003. - Staff Reporter

Token strike in Singareni collieries

ADILABAD: The one day token strike in Singareni Collieries' Bellampalli region on Thursday saw thin attendance and loss in production of about 75 per cent. The bandh was called by the Joint Action Committee of trade unions affiliated to IFTU and AIFTU and those associated with extreme Left wing organisations.

Only emergency services were active, Bellampalli DSP Satyanarayana Rao said. - Staff reporter

TTD to perform Lakshmi yagam

TIRUPATI: The TTD will perform `Sri Lakshmi Yagam' at Tiruchanur on March 18.

The TTD's Dharma Prachara Parishat will conduct the ritual at Tholappa gardens for the benefit of common good and world peace. Sriman Tirumalacharyulu, a Pancharatra Agama pundit at the Dharmagiri Vedapatasala (Tirumala) will be the chief priest for the ceremony.

The special programme will begin with `Kalasa Sthaapana' at 5 p.m. on that day and end with the traditional `Poornahuthi' at 1 p.m. on March 19. - Staff Reporter

Writer passes away

HYDERABAD: Janaki Ramachandran, wife of the late C.S. Ramachandran, Union Health Secretary, died here on Wednesday. She was 80.

She leaves two sons and daughter Gayatri Ramachandran, who is Special Chief Secretary to the Government.

Janaki, who hailed from a family of writers, had authored two children's books that earned her acclaim. - Special Correspondent

Panel visit

Kadapa: K. C. Reddy, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education, and a six-member high-power committee will visit Kadapa on March 18.

The panel will examine the academic and infrastructure requirements for establishing the proposed Yogi Vemana University here, according to an official statement. — Staff Reporter

Boy drowned

KURNOOL: A boy, identified as Imran, 10, drowned in KC Canal at Indira Nagar in the city on Thursday. According to reports, the boy got into the canal for bathing and drowned as the flow was heavy. In another incident, a woman, identified as Venkamma, 60, died of snakebite while she was working in her hotel. — Staff Reporter

Cyclist run over

KADAPA: A cyclist, Vali, 56, of N. Kottalapalle in Peddamudiyam mandal was fatally run over by a sand-laden tractor near the sub-jail in Jammalamadugu town on Thursday. Tractor driver Srinivasulu Reddy fled from the spot. The police registered a case.— Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry: On the occasion of its golden jubilee celebrations, the LIC has released three new policies. In a statement on Thursday, Senior Divisional Manager of the Rajahmundry Division, Roopkumar, said `Jeevan Tarang' whole life scheme, `Jeevan Akshay' for pensioners and `Amulya Jeevan' with Rs.25-lakh insurance were the three new policies.

Tailor ends life

Kakinada: A tailor, Katari Sankararao (33), reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling with a saree at his house in Manthripragadavari Veedhi in the early hours of Thursday. The three-town police who registered a case, said that acute abdominal pain was the reason for his extreme step. - Correspondent

Kakinada: Shaik Meera Saheb (50), a farm worker, was killed when his cycle was hit by a van at Prattipadu on the national highway on Thursday. The Prattipadu police registered a case. - Correspondent
