Heroin valued at Rs.8 crores seized

Thiruvananthapuram: The Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) seized eight kg. of heroin valued at Rs.8 crores from two persons at Shoranur railway station on Wednesday. The NCB identified those arrested in connection with the seizure as Abdul Razaaq (47), Moideen Kutty (47) and Usman (46).

According to the NCB, the drug was found concealed in the false bottom of a suitcase carried by Moideen Kutty. The NCB case is that Usman had offered Moideen Kutty Rs.1 lakh and free air ticket to smuggle the heroin into Jeddah in Saudi ArabiaAbdul Razaq was to accompany Moideen to Chennai and ensure that he boarded the flight to Jeddah. The NCB said Usman had procured the drug on credit from wholesale dealers from Madhya Pradesh. — Staff Reporter

Utsavabali to be performed today

Thrissur: The Utsavabali will be performed at the Guruvayur Sreekrishna temple on Friday as part of the annual festival. Chief Tantri Chennas Raman Namboodiri and Chennas Satheesan Namoodiri will perform the rites that will begin at 9 a.m. `Pallivetta' will be peformed on Saturday. The annual festival will conclude on Sunday with `Arat' and `Kodiyirakkam.' — Staff Reporter

Demand for new faces in Congress poll panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The 26-member Congress Election Committee on Thursday held its first round of discussion, with a majority of the members expressing the opinion that the party has to field new faces, including women and youth. The meeting, which was chaired by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala did not have any agenda before it as the Congress-DIC(K) issue was yet to be sorted out. However, the members expressed their views about the qualification of candidates.

They also felt that those who had put in a four-year term should not be given the chance to contest, with a few exceptions such as the Chief Minister.

Therefore, the election panel decided to adjourn and meet on March 18 by which time some kind of finality is expected on the proposal to bring in the DIC(K). — Special Correspondent

Power theft detected

KOLLAM: Inspections conducted by the squads of various electrical sections under the Chathannur Electrical Division detected power thefts up to Rs.4 lakhs, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Kollam Electrical Circle K. Radhakrishnan, said in a statement on Thursday. He said that inspections were being carried out at all the divisions under the circle. It has come to the notice of the KSEB that there are some `professionals' offering service on how to pilfer power. Reinstatement demanded

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Public Office unit of the NGO Union has demanded the immediate reinstatement of the seven employees dismissed from service by the Government. They were dismissed for participating in the strike against the policy of globalisation. A meeting of the unit, which adopted a resolution to the effect here on Thursday, elected D. Sajulal as president, K. Sivanath and K.Vasanthakumari as vice-presidents, B. Anil Kumar as secretary, V.K. Harikumar and S. Ajmal as joint secretaries and K. Commission holds first sitting

Thrissur: The Commission inquiring into alleged irregularities in the appointment of mahouts by Guruvayur Devaswom held its first sitting in Guruvayur on Thursday. K.T. Radhakrishna Menon, former ombudsman and High Court judge, collected evidence from 27 applicants to the posts of mahouts.

Chain snatched

Thrissur: Two persons on Thursday snatched a five-sovereign gold chain from a nurse working at a private hospital in Chalakudy and escaped on a bike, the police said. The nurse was walking along the road in front of Chalakudy Girls High School around 8.30 a.m. when her chain was snatched. The police have seized a mobile phone left behind by one of the chain-snatchers. — Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The Ponkunnam Varkey-Navalokam award instituted in memory of the playwright by Navalokam Cultural Centre here, has been awarded to Joseph Athirumkal for his short story `Model,' Centre president V N Vasavan said. Foundation stone to be laid

KOTTAYAM: The foundation stone for the proposed CH Institute of Medical Sciences will be laid on Friday. Panakkad Sayed Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal will be the chief guest. The Rs.24-crore project being implemented by the CH Muhammed Koya Memorial Educational and Charitable Trust will consist of a 100 seat dental college, a hospital, laboratory, hostels, library, auditorium and a place of worship, organisers said. — Staff Reporter
