Staff Reporter
ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha district committee of Kerala Vyapari Vyavasai Ekopana Samithi will submit a memorandum signed by one lakh persons to the President, Prime Minister, Chief Minister and the Union and State Health Ministers demanding upgrading of the Alappuzha Medical College to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Samithi district unit president M. Shamsuddin hailed the recent statement by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram promising to raise a medical college in the State to the status of AIIMS. Mr. Shamsuddin said Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kochi and Kozhikode where there are medical colleges have several super-specialty hospitals in the private sector. Almost all other districts in the State had several specialty hospitals in the private sector, he said. This, however, was the not the case in Alappuzha, he said. He observed that a large number of accidents occurred on the stretch of National Highway-47 in Alappuzha district. Hence, upgrading the medical college hospital had become imperative, he said. The association leaders pointed out that the medical college campus here had enough land for development purpose. Besides, more land could be acquired at low prices, if required, he said.
