BANGALORE: Rural service for teachers in primary and secondary schools and junior colleges will become mandatory with the State Cabinet deciding at its meeting on Thursday to introduce a Bill in this regard in the coming Budget session of the Legislature.

Under the new law, teachers will have to serve for specified period in primary and secondary schools and junior colleges in rural areas.

The Cabinet decided to introduce another Bill on the vexed issue of admission of students to professional courses. It is learnt that the meeting decided to drop the clause in the draft Bill stipulating imprisonment for managements who violate the admission norms. Instead it was decided to impose a penalty of up to Rs. 10 lakhs and withdraw the recognition granted to the erring institutions.

The meeting decided to fill 349 posts of lecturers and 331 posts of instructors, assistants and technicians in the Department of Technical Education. The Cabinet authorised Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on appointing two members to the Karnataka Public Service Commission.

At present, there are two vacancies in the seven-member Commission (including Chairman). For upgrading the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stands, the Cabinet decided to raise a loan of Rs. 15 crores from the HUDCO.

To eliminate regional imbalances, a decision has been taken to constitute a Cabinet sub-committee to monitor the implementation of Government programmes.

The Cabinet decided to give powers to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner to take action against erring officials posted to the civic body from the Government on deputation basis.

For efficient supply of power, Kodagu district has been brought under the jurisdiction of the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company.Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti said Thursday's SSLC examination at Gudur centre in Hungund taluk of Bagalkot district was postponed on account of malpractices.
