Centre must find a solution to dam issue: CPI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State unit of the Communist Party of India on Thursday urged the Centre to take immediate steps to find a solution to the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

In a statement, CPI secretary D. Pandian said the Kerala Government had tried to nullify the orders of the Supreme Court allowing the level of the dam to be raised to 142 feet, by adopting a resolution in the Assembly to amend the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation Act.

The apex court had given its verdict after obtaining the opinion of the experts. The Kerala Government's attitude would create many problems to the federal structure of the nation.

State's interests

will be affected

The Kerala Government's move would badly affect Tamil Nadu's interests as over two lakh acres in four southern districts were irrigated by water released from the dam.

Mr. Pandian also appealed to the people to come forward to raise their voice in unison to assert the State's rights on the issue.
