Goods vehicles carrying overloads to be seized

Staff Reporter

Officials told to enforce rule strictly

VIJAYAWADA: Following a Supreme Court order, the Transport Department will henceforth seize goods vehicles carrying overload and file cases against the drivers, leading to their prosecution.

Deputy Transport Commissioner M. Ratna Manikyam on Thursday said that G.O. No. 38 and the orders issued by the Transport and Roads & Buildings departments on March 4 contained rules amending Section 194(1) of the Central Motor Vehicles Act.

As per the amended rules, officials authorised to check a vehicle would seize it in case it carried overload instead of merely imposing fine. The lorry owner would have to use another vehicle to shift the load in excess of the permitted quantity.

Ms. Manikyam said that the drivers found guilty would be produced before the court of law and prosecuted.

In cases of overloads, the owners would have to bear expenses of unloading `excess goods' and also arrange for their safety.

The owners of lorries, tractor trailers and drivers were cautioned against violating the rules relating to loads.

Ms. Manikyam asked checking officials of motor vehicles, checkpost staff and the police to implement the rule strictly in the district.
