VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA) is likely to issue on Monday revenue notification for acquisition of land for widening of the first reach of Mahatma Gandhi Road (Bandar Road) from Police Control Room to Raghavaiah Park.

With the majority of the owners of first reach sticking to their stand that the road should be widened to only 80 feet, the UDA is finding it difficult to acquire land through a process of consultation, as it could be done by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) in case of other two reaches of the road, so that the road is widened uniformly to 100 feet.

Consequently, the UDA officials have decided that land acquisition under due process of law is the only option remaining now, though it means paying substantial amount of money towards compensation for structures as well as land acquired from owners.

The burden of payment of compensation will be shared by the UDA and the VMC.

The UDA officials said three of the four teams drafted for preparing new sketches for widening of the road to 120 feet had completed their work. The sketches were necessary to estimate the amount of compensation that would have to be paid to owners under Land Acquisition Act.

UDA Vice-Chairman V. Durga Das and Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar will be deciding about payment of compensation once the groundwork is over.

Contempt case

Meanwhile, both Mr. Durga Das and Mr. Gulzar will be appearing in the High Court on Friday in a case of contempt of court, filed by some owners of the second reach of Bandar Road. The aggrieved owners filed the case on the ground that the chief executives of the two civic agencies had flouted the court's directive on the widening of the road, amounting to its contempt.
