Highways team visits bridge construction site

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: A team of senior officials of the State Highways Department today visited the construction site of the Road Over Bridge to replace the railway level crossing (LC No. 29) near the Tambaram Sanatorium Railway station.

The inspection was made following a direction from the Madras High Court to constitute an Enquiry Commission after residents of East Tambaram appealed to make some changes in the designs to the bridge under construction in order to provide an approach from the East Tambaram side. As per the present design, the bridge connects Chitlapakkam Main Road with the Grand Southern Trunk Road without any access from East Tambaram from where there is greater volume of traffic, particularly heavy vehicles taking consignments from the Tambaram Railway Yard to the godown of the Central Warehousing Corporation at Chitlapakkam.

East Tambaram residents have been making this demand since the past two years. The completion of the ROB at MIT Gate, Chromepet, has immensely eased traffic flow from Chitlapakkam towards Sanatorium Railway station, but problems from East Tambaram persist.
